The objective of The Iowa Index of Geriatric Assessment Tools is to facilitate geriatric research through research proposals and grants and to validate current geriatric assessment tools within multiple settings (i.e. nursing homes, day cares, community, etc.).

The literature search of the Iowa Index of Geriatric Assessment Tools was accomplished under the sponsorship of the Gerontological Nursing Intervention Research Center [GNIRC] at The University of Iowa College of Nursing and The University of Iowa Center on Aging.

Researcher Specific Aims:

1) The Center on Aging Iowa Index of Geriatric Assessment Tools (IIGAT) provides researchers with a database of assessment tools designed and tested on older populations. These assessment tools are instruments that assess various physical, mental, or emotional conditions of the elderly in order to determine current needs or to establish long-term goals for communities, the state or the nation. This Index provides researchers with a resource to quickly locate available assessment tools for specific populations. Thus, with the IIGAT the current predominant tools are included with information that will facilitate the right selection for a current research proposal or project. This information includes the setting(s) where the tool has been validated; reliability information; strengths and weaknesses of the instrument; and finally the author(s) and basic reference information.

2) The Index of Geriatric Assessment tools is established, in part, to further test geriatric assessment tools in additional settings. This further testing in the form of pilot studies serves to enhance and promulgate new information in the field of aging.
