Guide
to Scholarly Publishing
Welcome
to the new, online edition of THE IOWA GUIDE: Scholarly Journals
in Mass Communication and
Related Fields. This 16-year-old publication
helps scholars find appropriate journals in which to publish
their work and offers advice on how to prepare manuscripts
for publication.
The searchable
online Directory of Journals catalogs the manuscript requirements
and review processes of
more than 125 English-language
scholarly journals published in the United States and countries
spanning the globe. Some of the journals focus on journalism,
mass communication
or communication as their primary concerns. Others address communication
in the context of another discipline, such as law or sociology,
or they include communication under an interdisciplinary
umbrella such
as popular culture or women’s studies.
The 10th
edition of THE IOWA GUIDE is the first to be published exclusively
online.
The 1987 first edition reported submission
requirements for
about 25 communication journals published primarily in the
United States. It is now broadly interdisciplinary and international
in scope. With this edition, the publication returns home to
the University
of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The University
of Iowa bought THE IOWA GUIDE back from Sage Publications,
Inc.,
which issued several annual editions before losing interest
and letting it die in 2000.
THE IOWA
GUIDE consists of two interdependent parts, this Guide to Scholarly
Publishing and the Directory of
Journals. The
Guide explains
the concepts and information reported in the Directory and
offers advice on scholarly publishing especially for those
new to this
enterprise. You may read this Guide online
and use the table
of contents to jump to sections of interest.
Alternatively, you may download the Guide as an Adobe pdf file
to use as
a handbook
to scholarly
publishing. You’ll need a freeAcrobat
reader to download
it. The Directory of Journals database is not available to
download, but there is a link to a printable entry for each
journal on its
entry page.
The Directory
of Journals offers information available nowhere else about the
manuscript requirements and review
processes
for each journal
listed. It also tells how to contact journal editors and
find the journals online. The Directory reports acceptance
rates,
circulation,
the average length of the manuscript review processes and
the time lag between acceptance and publication. We present
the
specifications in the Directory in uniform terms so you
may compare several
journals’ requirements
quickly and easily.
Our goal
for THE IOWA GUIDE Directory of Journals is to include all the
journals communication
scholars would consider
the
principal forums for scholarship in the field. The journals
we list represent
the eclectic or interdisciplinary nature of the study
of communication, broadly defined. We will update and expand
the Directory regularly.
